This is a chair made with non-deformable polyurethane foam in different densities combined with polyester fiber and a wooden structure that’s completely hidden. The chair has small wooden feet with a black lacquer finish which are basically impossible to spot. The chair thus appears to be floating which greatly complements its robustness.

Known for its exposed wood and elegant legs, reminiscent of the Louis XV period, the cabriole also has a distinctive silhouette. It was also a popular shape in the work of furniture maker Thomas Chippendale.

They’re quirky and cozy, but the whimsical air of works by artist Porky Hefer belies the deeper meaning of the hanging seats he creates. From animal shapes to ovate seats woven from various materials, the “nests” that the South African artist designs are definitely conversation pieces. A couple of years ago, I chose a couch from Article for a client (aka my little brother 😉 ), and I was so very impressed. I was a little hesitant about ordering furniture that I couldn’t touch beforehand (they sell exclusively online), but their low delivery price and easy return policy made it a no brainer… and the couch ended up being perfect: the quality, the style, and the price were incredible. So I began looking at Article when I was thinking about a new couch for my living room, and was so pleased to find this sectional and to partner with them on this project. The Cube is a very generous (both deep and wide) modular sofa, sold either as a three-piece set or piece by piece (ours is two ends, two middles, and one corner to make the giant L… and I do mean giant).

Of all the things that can be transformed into an ottoman, a galvanized wash tube is perhaps the most surprising. It makes a great rustic accent, though, and we love it. This has to be the cheapest material you can build an ottoman from. Can you believe a bunch of plastic bottles and carton is all it takes? And of course, fabric of your choice to make it pretty.

As in advertising, it creates the need.”

Represented in the United States by R & Company (and by the Southern Guild in South Africa) Hefer has recently gained much attention with his works at major design events like the London Design Biennale and Design Miami. His creative work started with woven nests, inspired by the indigenous weaver bird, which is known for its skill in crafting nests from whatever materials it can find.
