1. Begin with the paint: Starting to decorate living room for summer means that you need to begin from the wall. New wall color is the most obvious thing to bring the change. Recommended colors for summer are all colors in light tone; for example cool blue or green. Our walls, which are Sherwin Williams Agreeable Gray, are my favorite – light gray with some warm tones – and our kitchen cabinets are a darker warm gray. The gray blue of the sectional really is beautiful (and actually complements our marble in the kitchen really well). I think it will be a very forgiving color: light enough to help the room feel bright (remember one of my goals?), but dark enough to hide the inevitable grime of young kids.

But for a big Texas house, where we regularly try to sit 10-12 adults, it’s not large either. The room is about 13’x13′ with two walls of huge windows (which I LOVE, but they do make furniture placement tricky) and – thanks to our fireplace renovation – one wall of cabinetry and fireplace. The fourth “wall” is open past the bar area to our kitchen table.

And the fabric has a gorgeous linen look but seems so very durable – a huge factor when I’m choosing furniture that my kids will be using regularly. To make that easier, Article even has durability scores of the fabrics on their site; they recommend looking for fabric sofas with a Martindale rub test of at least 25,000 rubs… and the Cube surpasses that by a long shot with a score of 100,000. The couch is firm enough that you don’t fall into it and get stuck (which is important given how low it is), but it’s wonderfully comfortable to sit for hours – working on your laptop or watching a movie.

In a 2010 interview with Design Indaba, Hefer said that he “Pray(s) that South Africans start recognizing creativity when it is born not after it has become successful in Europe or America.” It is certainly Hefer’s mission to bring the artistry and skills of South Africa to the forefront, and many other areas of the world could also benefit from greater attention to the talents the offer.

No matter what form his work takes, it is part of an ever-growing artistic movement celebrating individualistic hand-crafted pieces as an antidote to today’s mass production. The mastery of different materials and the high level of workmanship is evident in the details on all his chairs. For example, mere stitching between the sections of leather is elevated to an important design detail on all the seats.

It’s pretty difficult to say what makes cool chairs look cool in the first place, mostly because there are so many different possibilities and so many little details capable of giving that impression. For the Fringes armchair it would obviously have to be the fringes. However, not any chair could pull off such a look which means that it’s important to look at this design detail in the context of the design as a whole.
