The overly plush cushion provides cozy seating when rolled against the backrest plus when it's time to lay down for a nice sleep. It rolls down to form a tatami‐style bed, with the backrest forming a sturdy headboard.

Pullout pop―ups: This style operates like a trundle: A bottom mattress pulls out from below the sofa. You could use it as two twin beds ‐ as seen here or pop the lower mattress up to make a larger bed. You don't need as much space to pull out the bed since it has you sleeping parallel to the back of the sofa.

And the fabric has a gorgeous linen look but seems so very durable – a huge factor when I’m choosing furniture that my kids will be using regularly. To make that easier, Article even has durability scores of the fabrics on their site; they recommend looking for fabric sofas with a Martindale rub test of at least 25,000 rubs… and the Cube surpasses that by a long shot with a score of 100,000. The couch is firm enough that you don’t fall into it and get stuck (which is important given how low it is), but it’s wonderfully comfortable to sit for hours – working on your laptop or watching a movie.

It's important to keep the fabric grain straight here. Secure one side of the fabric under the frame at the center, then move out toward the corners. Staple a little at a time, then move to the opposite side, pulling firmly and evenly and out toward the corners. (This pulls out lumps and bumps.) Secure each side with a line of staples, moving out toward the corners but stopping at least 6 inches short of each corner.

Today, this sofa style lends a more formal air to any space, especially when upholstered in a formal fabric. A more casual textile choice would make it appropriate for a family room that doesn’t need a great deal of formality. In either case, the camelback sofa has some elements that characterize the style. When we first moved in, we had the tv on a bench in front of the window, two oversized brown leather pieces floating opposite the tv, a bookcase tucked into the corner, and an old tufted ottoman in the center. They all looked beautiful in our old living room (where the tv hung on the wall above the fireplace), but in this room they were awkward and totally inefficient. The room felt cramped, and we could still only seat 4-5 people.

So I set out with two main goals for this living room makeover: add more (and more efficient) seating AND create a light, bright feel. And the key to this space was actually not smaller furniture, but bigger furniture… Crazy, right?

Much like a porch swing or a rocking chair, the gentle motion is calming to humans. Of course, the fact that Hefer’s seats are furry, cocoon-like enclosures makes them all the more alluring. There’s certainly something comforting about curling up in a womb-like enclosure.

High-contrast patterns, like the black-and-white wallpaper pictured here, will help to bring out the dark and light tones in your sofa’s shade of gray. Just be sure to stick to a general color palette when mixing patterns so your look doesn’t feel too chaotic.
