The role of an accent role in some cases is to become a visual focal point for the space and to direct the attention towards a particular spot. Sometimes that is ensured by a design that’s sculptural and just a little bit theatrical, like that of the Quinaquina chair. It’s a swivel chair with a circular wooden base and an octagonal body.

In accessories designer Fiona Kotur's Hong Kong house, the sitting room’s custom-made sectional sofa is dressed in a Designtex fabric, with pillows of a Lee Jofa solid and a Kelly Wearstler for Groundworks print; Kotur designed the cocktail table, which is clad in basketweave-pattern copper tile by Maya Romanoff, the 1950s palm-tree lamp is by Jansen, and the vintage Moroccan carpet is from Woven Accents.

There are a lot of comfortable chairs out there and while some only offer the illusion of comfort by looking cozy, the ones that we’re interested in take things further and are created with this specific detail in mind. When we first moved in, we had the tv on a bench in front of the window, two oversized brown leather pieces floating opposite the tv, a bookcase tucked into the corner, and an old tufted ottoman in the center. Designer Alicia Murphy used a sectional in the living room of a teensy trailer she converted into a plush family getaway in Montauk, New York, for this very reason: "If you were to use a sofa and a chair, you would have about 36” of dead space in the corner—but by using a sectional you give that corner life. You most likely will add seating for two or three more people if you use a corner sectional rather than a sofa and chair."

Whether true vintage pieces, reproductions or new designs that incorporate Mid-Century Modern elements, these are very versatile sofas. Most often used in a minimalist or mid-century design scheme, they are wonderful for adding a retro feel to a room. The distinguishing elements include the exposed legs and linear structure. Most mid-century sofas — but not all of them — will have some tufting on the back.

Regardless, this now-classic sofa has several characteristics that are always present: The back and the arms are both of one height and the back is deeply tufted with buttons. Traditionally, the arms were always rolled and the sofa had nailheads, however, modern styles are taking slight design liberties. This green Chesterfield from Abbyson Living has the suggestion of a roll from the interior side of the sofa, but still maintains a clean line from the exterior side.
