Button detail upholstered ottomans make a gorgeous centrepiece in any living space and a large tray is crucial in order to make sure it is as functional as it is stylish, creating a flat surface that will allow you to rest a drink or plate on. Look for large trays with handles that can be used to transport drinks from the kitchen like this one show in this design by Mackenzie & Temple Architects & Designers.

A sleek, low-profile sectional calls for a striking backdrop. Scan your living space before situating your clean-lined stunner, and choose according to background options. An interesting accent wall or exposed brick does the trick, as does a sweeping view.

After starting with nests, Hefer’s work evolved into animal-shaped forms that are playful and comfortable. The figures invite people to climb into the comfy seat through the wide open mouth of the beast. From toothy crocodiles to killer whales, tigers and toucans – the “Monstera Deliciosa” collection, along with other assorted creatures, is a menagerie of inviting, cheeky beasts. Despite the large teeth inside the gaping maw of these works, they are still comfortable nests, beckoning you to crawl in and curl up.

A couple of years ago, I chose a couch from Article for a client (aka my little brother 😉 ), and I was so very impressed. I was a little hesitant about ordering furniture that I couldn’t touch beforehand (they sell exclusively online), but their low delivery price and easy return policy made it a no brainer… and the couch ended up being perfect: the quality, the style, and the price were incredible. So I began looking at Article when I was thinking about a new couch for my living room, and was so pleased to find this sectional and to partner with them on this project. The Cube is a very generous (both deep and wide) modular sofa, sold either as a three-piece set or piece by piece (ours is two ends, two middles, and one corner to make the giant L… and I do mean giant).

Most often used in a minimalist or mid-century design scheme, they are wonderful for adding a retro feel to a room. The distinguishing elements include the exposed legs and linear structure. Most mid-century sofas — but not all of them — will have some tufting on the back.

She recommends choosing a piece with a low back and arms to "help a small room not feel engulfed by a piece of furniture," and using either standing lamps behind it or sconces above it to light the room without a table lamp.

If you want to stitch the corner closed, use an upholsterer's stitch (ladder stitch) or an invisible stitch. Another option is carefully running a small bead of hot glue inside the fold and pressing the fold into place.

Article also offers the Cube in white (which I would love, but I don’t find it practical at this stage in our family’s life) and a Thunder Gray (which was actually my original choice, but the Glacier Blue was available more quickly and I liked the idea of a lighter color). All that to say, it’s a lovely color but definitely a blue gray, not a warm gray.

The warmth of wood helps to balance out the cool tones often found in gray, so embrace wood where you have it. If you have wood paneling or wood beams overhead, install an eye-catching light fixture to draw the eye upward. If you have wood built-ins, style them with colorful, curated accessories to ensure they’re a focal point.
